Rhode Island’s public benefits system, RIBridges, has been hit by a ransomware attack. Hackers threatened to release sensitive personal information unless a payment was made. The attack, disclosed on Saturday (Dec. 14), prompted immediate action from state officials, including shutting down the online portal used to manage benefits such as Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Child Care Assistance Program, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
At a news conference, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee confirmed that the stolen data might be exposed early this week. Deloitte, the system’s vendor, informed the state that the breached information potentially includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and banking details.
“We are currently unaware of any identity theft or fraud related to this data breach. However, we advise customers to remain vigilant and monitor their accounts for any unauthorized activity,” read a statement from the governor’s office.
The state has urged affected users to change passwords on sensitive accounts, enable two-factor authentication, and monitor financial accounts closely for suspicious activity. Additionally, households whose data may have been compromised will be notified by mail with details on accessing free credit monitoring services.
RIBridges, the backbone of Rhode Island’s public benefits system, remains offline as officials work to address the threat. Governor McKee emphasized the seriousness of the situation, while Deloitte has been tasked with assessing the breach and implementing corrective measures.
This incident is the latest in a growing trend of ransomware attacks targeting critical public and private systems, underscoring the vulnerability of digital infrastructure. Organizations across sectors have seen a surge in cyber threats, with attackers exploiting sensitive data for financial gain.
